SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS (SUDS)
Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are drainage solutions that provide an alternative to the direct channelling of surface water through networks of pipes and sewers to nearby watercourses.
The need for alternative drainage such as SuDS is likely to increase to meet environmental challenges such as climate change and population growth. Provision for SuDS and the national standards required for their design, construction, maintenance and operation is included in the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.
The first intention of a SUDS design is to allow the water to soak away or percolate into the ground. This is achieved by excavating a suitable sized pit and then placing in a proprietary soak away system.
If a soakway is not feasible, the designer will look to slow down the run off of water into the public sewer or watercourse. This is usually done by collecting or ‘attenuating’ the water then limiting the amount of water that can be discharged by use of a flow control device.
